Nightmare #2.8 : Tribute

This one is called ‘Buffalo Soldier’. For a guy who almost single-handedly brought reggae up from being mere ‘protest music’ to a mainstream artform, Bob Marley has sure acheived quite a lot in his short lifetime…This one is for you Bob…R.I.P.

Wanted to add one more…Lets see if I can wrap it up before dawn breaks :)

Nightmare #2.7 : Impressions in graphite

This week, I decided to shift gears a little…why not move from pen and ink to pencil based stuff?? The below have been spawned from that thought..

This first one is called ‘Siesta’…somehow reminds me of Circuit theory (hail KSSK!!!) lectures…

This next one has been tentatively Christened ‘Sax’…… Yes, yes, i know it sounds like my 9th grade Class teacher from Punjab trying to say the ‘S’ word…

More to follow later…till then, live long and prosper!!!

Nightmare #2 : Children of Light

It is public knowledge that I’m a self confessed comic book geek…But the fact remains that even though I did start reading comics at a young age (the occasional superman or green lantern), the burning flames of my undying thirst for all things that go biff! pow! bam! (stop! stop!) were re-kindled at a much later age…to be precise, second year of college. It was a friend’s (a friend with unequal ear sizes who makes a living selling lubricants, to be specific) 40 gb collection of e-comics that awoke the dormant, drooling, gibberish spouting fanboy personality once and for all. And what you see below is just spawned from that.

This is the very first book I got to work on – Children of Light Vol.2 created by a really nice chap called Tommy Flick. It was an action/fantasy with heavy Christian undertones about a bunch of kids with special abilities who fight monsters that are almost direct references to stuff the bible preaches against. More importantly, it was a jam comic – something I was seeing for the first time – where each page/ a bunch of pages are done by different artists. And I got to do page 23. So this is what mighty pen (he insists on me addressing him as mighty) and me managed to churn out.

Tommy liked it (yeah yeah all hail the mighty pen :P ), and was kind enough to give me 2 more pages to do, which i had to back out of bcos of other commitments.

Anyways, Children of Light Vol.1 is available for purchase online and Vol. 2 will follow soon. Tommy’s busy at work on Vol.3 right now.

That’s all for today…  live long and prosper y’all….

Nightmare #1.5

Here’s a couple of quick ones before my next major post..

the-crow

Top to Bottom :

Pinhead – Being a die-hard fan(atic) of the hellraiser series, I guess Pinhead deserved more pixel space than the stranger-in-the-dark imagery in my prev. post…So here ya go, big guy…

The Crow – One of my all time favorite graphic novels and movie adaptations (only the first one), James O Barr’s labor of love about a vengeful (and dead) lover reanimated by the spirit of the crow, is definitely worth a read. Its one of those rare books (apart from my power electronics textbook) from which you tend to discover something new every read. Do give it a try…

Quick Gun Murugun – From a 2 minute ad spot on MTV to a 2 hour movie, Q G Murugun has definitely come a long way. Creators Shashanka Ghosh and Rajesh Devaraj deserve praise for creating a fun, watchable faux-pas western on a stereotypical vegetarian Tamil B movie cowboy (man, what a sentence) without testing/tasting the viewers patience. So here’s my tribute to them I say!!! Mind it….

That’s all for now…until next time, so long, fellow demons!!!

Nightmare #1

untitled monster mashup

untitled monster mashup

All my pieces are done in fits of inspiration..Fits that would’ve served better had they lasted a wee bit longer… This is one of them. An idea spawned from reading too many ‘super team’ books (JLA, Avengers, WildC.A.T.S, Gen13, and a couple of zillion more) and a late night screening of X Men:The Last stand, what stuck me was that most of these characters were fighting for good. What happens when you have a group fighting or forced to fight for the exact opposite cause? This is what you end up with – A super-villain team up!!!

In the picture (L-R):

Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th series) : ‘Special’ kid at Camp Crystal lake drowns because of negligence of camp supervisors. Gets resurrected, grabs a machete and goes on a hack-a-thon thro truckloads of h*rny teenagers. Wore a paper bag over his head till his third movie, after which he upgraded to his signature hockey mask. Still lives and directly reports to Mommy dearest, Pamela Voorhees. Has been to outer space (Jason X). Recently got a reboot (Friday the 13th 2009) which sucks as bad as the umpteen misfires before it. Has shared screen time with one of weirdos in this team (Freddy vs. Jason).

Pinhead (Hellraiser series) (in the background) : Captain Elliott Spencer of the British Expeditionary Force gets disillusioned with life after the war and goes on a journey of ‘discovery’ which finds him dabbling in the dark arts. After accidentally opening up a ‘Lament configuration’ he picked up from an Indian market, he gets sucked into and transformed into the lord of a group of monstrous entities called Cenobites who live in a realm controlled by a black light emitting diamond shaped thing called the leviathan, apart from having 2000 nails/pins being hammered into his skull – hence the name (duh). Has been to outer space (Hellraiser:Bloodline). Plans on  a reboot from creator Clive Barker. The first and second movies are truly one of the scariest my humble, twisted self has ever seen.

Freddy Krueger (Nightmare on Elm street series) : Child killer who was burnt alive by disgruntled residents of Elm street. Gets resurrected and haunts kids in their dreams. Has starred in a much under-appreciated, but genre bending flick (Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare). Pretty popular among zombie cheerleader circles for his wisecracks. Never been to space. Plans on a much anticipated reboot with Jackie Earl Haley (Rorschasch from Watchmen) playing yours truly. Has shared screen time with one of weirdos in this team (Freddy vs. Jason). Has a nursery rhyme in his honour (??!!) which goes like this:

“One, Two, Freddy´s coming for you.
Three, Four better lock your door.
Five, Six grab your crucifix.
Seven, Eight gonna stay up late.
Nine, Ten never sleep again.”

Pumpkinhead (Pumpkinhead series) : A creature that arises out of a voodoo curse to avenge the death of a loved one of the person who calls it. Been out of work lately. Last 2 movies went straight-to-Sci Fi channel. Never been to space.

Talking of evil team ups, its not really a new concept in comics so to speak  – think Modok’s 11 and countless movie monster pile-ups. But this team of child killers and voodoo creatures i managed to put together is one that hasn’t been thought of, as far as I know.I even managed to create a loose back story for the team, which btw involved John Constantine!! (no not the wooden faced on from the Keanu Reeves movie – rather Alan Moore’s alcoholic, chain smoking true brit from the Hellblazer comics).

Couldn’t really think of a name for the team. Thought I’d name them Freakforce – but apparently Erik Larsen’s already taken that.

Q:Satan’s 6??

A:But I can see only 4.

Q:Conglomerate of evil??

A:Nah, too Dan Brown.

Q:Ministry of Monsters??

A:What is this? A Disney Movie???

Anyways, this project too has been stalled indefinitely. Might revive it, with altogether new freaks (Mike Myers, Chucky, prob.  Patrick Bateman (American Psycho) as well). In the meantime, if someone can think of names, do let me know (like you have nothing better to do).
